CCS Disability Action Gardens http://www.adcoss.org.nz/item/ccs-disability-action-gardens/ Tue, 29 Mar 2016 00:55:48 +0000 http://w2mhosting.net/adcoss/item/ccs-disability-action-gardens/ Our community garden in Auckland’s Royal Oak uses sustainable and permaculture gardening practices, and is used to showcase accessibility through gardening.

In the garden we have raised beds which are ideal for growing of vegetables. With a focus on community development and education, the gardens are a perfect place for people to work together and learn about sustainable gardening.

Our commitment to building inclusive communities

As an organisation, CCS Disability Action is committed to building an inclusive community and the garden provides an opportunity for people from diverse backgrounds to come together to share in an experience which is has wide health and social benefits.

Learning more about gardening

We have developed the garden so it can be used and shared by many in the community and offer a number of courses and other events on gardening, healthy living and sustainability:

Master Gardener Programme

We offer a 10 week course that covers the philosophy of growing organic and provides hands-on and practical information. This course brings together experts with a wide range of experience in organic gardening and permaculture and provides participants with the knowledge to be successful in creating an urban garden.

Royal Oak Market

We host the market quarterly, and there is always an opportunity to hear from gardening experts, and get ideas on health living and sustainbility at a number of free workshops held throughout the day.

Organic produce for sale

We also sell organic produce from our gardens in our garden shop.  The shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am – 3pm.

Now reduced in size it is still an organic community garden focusing mostly on edibles and is a small space for the use of anyone who would like to garden with us on Fridays at 10 AM, to call in for a visit, or bring a picnic lunch and relax in the bountiful small garden. It has picnic tables and seats, it’s child-safe with a fence, a secure gate, good vibes and prolific plants.
