Plunket CBD Project- Experiences of parents living in inner city Auckland.

Experiences of parents living in inner city Auckland.

This project is being sponsored by Plunket and S.K.I.P (initiative of MSD) and has been initiated to understand and determine the positive and/or negative experiences of parents living in inner city Auckland.  From Plunket data, families living in Auckland city appear to have concerns or difficulties in addition to the wellness and care of their family.  Issues such as immigration, housing, finances, personal relationships, transport and study can all add to an already demanding situation of having a new baby or raising a family.

The project will be conducted using the co-design or parent-centred design process.  A co-design approach is being adopted because it can help bring service providers and agencies together to collaborate, when the default is often to work in silos. There can also be a tendency for services to be designed and developed in isolation and at a distance from end-users. For many people who use public services it can too often feel like they have to fit the requirements of the service, rather than the service adapting to meet their needs.

This project requires project team members from organisations who have the well-being of family as one of their core values, and who have a genuine interest in working with inner city families and developing ideas and initiatives that will make a real difference in this community.

We already have support from Plunket staff, Auckland Council, Waitemata Local Board, Chinese New Settlers, The Asian Network, KINZ and Best Start but would like to open the doors to all organisations who may be interested in taking part in this project.  We are very keen to get the right people around the table.

The commitment of time is approximately 6-12 weeks once the project gets going, but it is not like other projects whereby the team will be required for a specific time each week.  It is more of an organic process and the team will come together for specific tasks, such as training in co-design, parent interviews, extracting and anaylising insights, design and innovation sessions, prototyping, and testing initiatives and ideas.   In addition, the project team will also learn the co-design/parent centred design process which will be extremely valuable when their organisation is seeking data from their client base in future.
